Rishad Hossain made history as the first Bangladeshi right-arm wrist spinner to claim a five-wicket haul in ODIs, guiding Bangladesh to a 74-run victory over West Indies in the first match of the three-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Saturday.
After Bangladesh were bowled out for 207 in 49.4 overs, Rishad contributed a quick 26 off 13 balls. In reply, the visitors collapsed to 133 all out in 39 overs, despite a strong 51-run opening stand.
Rishad was the destroyer-in-chief, finishing with stunning figures of 6 for 35 in 9 overs. He dismissed opener Alick Athanaze lbw to break the opening stand and later sent back Keacy Carty, Brandon King (44), Sherfane Rutherford, and Roston Chase — his fifth victim — to complete a remarkable five-for.
The 23-year-old became the first leg-spinner in ODI history to claim the opposition’s first five wickets. Mustafizur Rahman (2), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Tanvir Islam shared the remaining wickets.
Earlier, Bangladesh lost openers Saif Hasan and Soumya Sarkar early, but Najmul Hossain Shanto (32) and Towhid Hridoy (51) steadied the innings with a 71-run stand. Mahidul Islam Ankon added 46 and helped push the total past 200 with Mehidy and Rishad’s late hitting.
For West Indies, Jayden Seales took three wickets while Khary Pierre bowled economically for 1-19.
The second ODI will be played on Tuesday at the same venue.
