Voting in the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUKSU) election is underway on Thursday (October 16) amid high enthusiasm, but a vice-presidential candidate backed by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) alleged that his polling agents were barred from viewing the photo voter list at one centre.
Speaking to reporters around 9 am after inspecting the Zuberi Bhaban centre—where students from Syed Ameer Ali Hall and Shah Makhdum Hall are casting ballots—Sheikh Nur Uddin Abir, the VP candidate from the “Oikoboddho Notun Projonmo” panel, said agents from his slate were stopped from accessing the list that includes voters’ photographs.
He said he had raised the matter with the Chief Election Commissioner, who assured him that the issue would be addressed promptly.
Abir added that the overall situation remained satisfactory and voiced confidence that the polls would be free, fair and credible.
He urged students to resist any attempt to bring outsiders onto campus, noting the extensive security arrangements in place.
Voting runs from 9 am to 4 pm. The RUKSU, hall union and student representative elections to the University Senate are being held after a gap of 35 years.
