Fahad murder: Ultimatum for complete ban on politics in BUET

DHAKA: Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) placed a fresh 10-point demand over the murder of their fellow student Abrar Fahad. 

They demanded a complete ban on political activities of all parties and organisations on their campus within October 15.

The agitating students placed their demands at a press conference held on Shaheed Minar premises of BUET on Wednesday (Oct 9).

The demands include capital punishment to the killers after identifying them from CCTV footage, expulsion of all the accused from the university by 5pm on October 11, an end to all sorts of ragging in the residential halls and expelled those who are found involved in ragging, CCTV cameras should be installed on both sides of every wing of the residential halls, withdrawal of Sher-e-Bangla Hall Provost Muhammad Zafar Iqbal Khan by 5:00pm of October 11 for his failure to protect students, expulsion of all the identified killers from Buet for life within 72 hours, trial of the Abrar murder case at a speedy tribunal, compensation to Abrar’s family and bearing their expenses for running legal battle in the murder case, 

The agitating students of BUET also demanded a common website/platform/forum which will have all such incidents that have previously occurred along with details of the legal progress.

At the press conference, the protesting students said all academic activities of BUET will remain closed until their demands are met.

They also said that candles will be lit at the Shaheed Minar premises of BUET at 7pm on Wednesday to protest the killing of Fahad.

In memory of Fahad, they also called on all the educational institutions of Bangladesh to observe the candle-lit program on their respective campuses.

After the press conference, the general students brought out protest procession and marched around the BUET campus.

Abrar Fahad, a second year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of BUET was allegedly beaten to death at his dorm Sher-e-Bangla Hall early Monday (Oct 7).

The body of Fahad was found lying between the first and second floors of Sher Bangla Hall.

Later on that day, police arrested 10 BCL leaders of its Buet unit over the alleged involvement in the killing of fellow student Abrar Fahad. 

On Tuesday (Oct 8), a Dhaka court placed ten leaders of BCL on a five-day remand and fixed November 13 for submission of probe report of the case filed over the murder of Abrar Fahad.
