Doctors resume services on a limited scale

Doctors protesting against attacks on colleagues would resume outdoor and indoor services across the country from Tuesday on a limited scale to press home their demands of security assurance and justice against the attackers.

Emergency services would continue without interruptions.

Resident Surgeon Abdul Ahad made the announcement Sunday during a press conference held at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The doctors would also stage sit-ins on hospital premises from 8am-10am every day until their demands are met, Abdul Ahad told reporters.

After the sit-ins, they would start the day’s outdoor services at 10am and would continue serving till 1pm six days a week.

Previously, outdoor services at government hospitals started at 7am everyday except Friday.

The doctors would resume indoor services from Tuesday, but would not perform routine duties, they said.

The doctors are demanding formation of a separate “health police unit” under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), and arrest of the remaining accused in a case filed over Saturday’s attacks on doctors at DMCH.

On Monday, one of the four named accused were arrested in the case filed with Shahbagh Police Station. Fifty other unnamed individuals have been implicated in the case.
