Interns go on strike, nurses withdraw

DHAKA: Intern doctors of Mitford Hospital went on work abstention on Sunday hampering medical services to the patients though the nurses gave up their strike.

Earlier, authorities of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital on Saturday temporarily suspended the accused intern doctor amid nurse strike protesting physical assault of a nurse.

The assaulted nurse’s colleagues also alleged that the accused, Rafiqul Islam Sujon, also attempted sexual harassment to the nurse.

However, the intern doctors started work abstention from 1:00pm.

Confirming the matter to banglanews, interns’ spokesman Dr Iftekhar Amin said that there is no working environment in the hospital.

“The nurses are giving provocative speeches against the doctors,” he added. “They had also closed the medicine supplying room.”

Moreover, Dr Iftekhar also demands punishment of senior nurse Bakul Rani Das, who complained against one of the intern last day.

“The nurse, Bakul, made false allegation against the doctors-intern doctors, so she should be punished,” the intern spokesman added.

Furthermore, Dr Iftekhar also said that the accused, Sujon, should be given chance of self defense.

Nevertheless, the authorities sit with the both sides to break the deadlock where Mitford director Brig Gen Zakir Hasan was also present.
