DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directed officials concerned to make doctors and nurses Officer on Special Duty (OSD) if anybody is absent in workstation, does not provide services to patients. 

“If necessary, doctors and nurses who are involved in such wrongdoings will be sacked permanently,” she issued the warnings while exchanging views with officials at Heath Ministry on Sunday.

PM Hasina said, “Surveys should be done in all districts. Doctors who are absent in hospitals will be identified. Those who do not provide services will be made OSD”.

“Doctors have been given honors. Of course, medical services must be ensured. Otherwise, they would have to leave their jobs”, she added.

In the meantime, she also directed authorities concerned to introduce biometric attendence system at all government hospitals to ensure the presence of the doctors.

Instructing the nurses to discharge their duty properly, the premier said, “Nurses will not serve - it's not right. Nurses will have to fulfill their responsibilities properly”.

Issuing a warning to the nurses, the Prime Minister said “Nurses were given second grade why will they not serve the patients. The nurses were not allowed to just feed drugs to patents. Those who do not serve the patients need not come in this profession”.

Besides, the Prime Minister urged the Health Ministry to make the nurses’ job responsibility more specific as soon as possible.

Giving instruction to introduce two-year internship for doctors, the Prime Minister said, “Two years internship will be arranged for doctors. One year will be required for upazila level hospitals”.

Directing to increase surveillance in private medical colleges, Sheikh Hasina said, “Authorities concerned have to pay attention to private medical colleges. Monitoring should be increased so that they become the doctors with appropriate education”.
