DHAKA:  Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Malik said almost six lakhs people suffered burn injuries every year in the country.

Most of the burn victims are poor. In addition to this, many people sustained burns from electrocution, but they are living miserable life without treatment, he added.

The minister said this in a meeting held on Thursday (July 4) after inaugurating the 500-bed Sheikh Hasina Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Chankharpul area of the capital city.

Zahid Malik said, “There will be no need to worry anymore for the helpless burnt patients. In addition to providing services to patients, this hospital will also play a role in the making of specialist doctors. Through this, there is a huge development in the health sector”.

While speaking about history of the Burn Institute, the Health Minister said, BNP-Jamaat alliance had torched people in the name of movement in the country. Then, the Prime Minister instructed to expand the burn unit.

Earlier, this unit was set up at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Later, it was opened in the DMCH. Currently it has been transformed into an institute. As a result, the poor will especially be benefited, he elaborated.

Earlier in the morning, Zahid Malik inaugurated the 13-storey specialized institute located in Chankharpul area of the capital city.

Around 11:30am, he placed floral wreaths at the murals of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in the institute.

The institute made a trial run for last three days.
