LALMONIRHAT: The rail communication of Burimari land port with other parts of the country halted after an express train derailed in Tepatari area under Kaliganj upazila of the district early Wednesday.

Sources said two compartments including engine of the Lalmonirhat-bound train veered off the tracks at around 2:30am after hartal supporters uprooted the fishplates of the rail tracks, leaving 18 people injured.

Confirming the matter, Lalmonirhat Department Traffic Sergeant Mostafizur Rahman told banglanews that the train derailed as hartal supporters removed the fishplates of the rail tracks.”

A rescue train rushed to the spot, he added.
