Low-lying areas in Kurigram flooded

KURIGRAM : Onrush of hill waters across the border and incessant rain for last few days submerged a vast land in 12 unions of  five upazilas, leaving about 20,000 people virtually marooned.

Rain-fed 16 rivers, including Brahmaputra, Dharala, Teesta and Dudhkumor marked a sharp rise on Monday and were flowing just below their respective dangers levels, according to the sources in the Water Development Board (WDB).

District WDB Executive Engineer Rezaul Karim Mostafa Ashafaddoula told banglanews24.com.bd  that some 129 villages in Sadar, Roumari, Razibpur, Chimari and Ulipur upazilas were flooded.

According to the WDB, water level of Dharala rose by 85cm at ferry ghat point while Brahmaputra by 45cm at Chilmari point, Teesta by 75 cm at Kaunia point and Dushkumor by 93 cm at Nunkhaowa point in last 24 hours till 6pm Monday.

Kurigram Deputy Commissioner Habibur Rahman informed some 90 mts of rice were allocated on Monday to distribute among the flood-affected people.
