A Habiganj court today (September 21) sentenced two people to death in the sensational Modinatul Kubra Jerin murder case in 2020 in Sadar upazila of the district.
The death-row convicts are - Jakir Hossain of Dhal village in Sadar Upazila and Nur Hossain of Patli village.
Judge of Habiganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Sudipta Das handed down the verdict.
The court also fined convicts Tk 50,000 each, said Public Prosecutor advocate Abul Hashem Molla.
According to the prosecution, on January 18, 2020, SSC examinee Modinatul Kubra Jerin was going to her school boarded on a CNG-run auto rickshaw. Convicts Jakir and Nur Hossain took position in the CNG earlier. They barred Jerin from getting down from the CNG.
At one stage, Jerin jumped down from the auto-rickshaw and got injured.
Local people admitted Jerin, an inhabitant of Dhal village, to Habiganj Sadar Hospital which later referred her to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on January 19.
Police pressed the charge sheet accusing the duo after Jerin's father filed a case in 2020.
