Inclement weather: 200 tourists stranded in St Martin

At least 200 tourists are stranded in St Martin as the authorities have suspended the movement of ships on the Teknaf-St Martin route due to adverse weather.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Adnan Chowdhury confirmed the matter.

He said the administration took the decision after the weather office issued warning signal no 3.

Due to inclement weather, all types of speedboats and wooden trawlers were suspended on the St. Martin route, he said.

However, marking World Tourism Day, a ship named 'Baro Aulia' was allowed to give tourists transport service to visit St. Martin, he added.

The Baro Aulia ship manager Hosainul Islam Bahadur said once the weather conditions are favorable, the ship services from Teknaf will resume and the stranded tourists will be brought back.

Meanwhile, a former UP member of St. Martin's Union died when a speedboat from Teknaf to St. Martin capsized near Naikhagdia Point on Friday (September 29). At this time, 23 people including 17 tourists were rescued by members of the Coast Guard.
