DHAKA: A Dhaka court Wednesday awarded death penalty to eight men and life imprisonment to 13 others for their involvement in much-talked-about tailor man Biswajit murder case.
Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 judge ABM Nizamul Haque pronounced the verdict.
All the convicts are the activists and leaders of Chhatra League of Jagannath University.
The convict who were awarded death sentence ---Rafiqul Islam Shakil, Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid, Emdadul Haque Emdad, GM Rasheduzzaman Shaon, Saiful Islam, Quaiyum Mia, Razon Talukder and Mir Nur-e-Alam Limon.
While AHM Kibria, Golam Mostofa, Khondaker Md Yunus Ali, Tarik bin Johr Tomal, Golam Mostafa, Alauddin, Obaidul Quader Tahsin, Imran Hossain Imran, Azizur Rahman Aziz, Al-Amin Sheikh, Rafiqul Islam, Monirul Haque Pavel, Kamrul Hasan and Mosharraf Hossain were awarded life term in jail and fined Tk 20 thousand each.
Amongst 21 Chhatra League activists, eight detained accused were produced before the court during the pronouncement of the verdict.
They are Rafiqul Islam Shakil, Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid, Emdadul Haque Emdad, GM Rasheduzzaman Shaon, AHM Kibria, Saiful Islam, Quaiyum Mia and Golam Mostofa.
Besides, eight of the accused is still fugitive.
On March 5, Detective Branch of Police submitted the charge sheet against the 21 accused.
Tailoring shop employee Biswajit Das who was chopped to death by the BCL workers near the Bahadur Shah Park in the old city during the opposition’s countrywide blockade programme on December 9 last year.
