President donates eyes posthumously

DHAKA: President M Abdul Hamid on Wednesday declared to donate his eyes posthumously for the use of medical researchers.

The President made the announcement while attending the inauguration ceremony of Shandhani Bhaban here at city’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium.

President said: “I am suffering from glaucoma ....I am not sure whether denotation of my corneas will be worthy or not ... if it becomes useful I am declaring to donate my eyes posthumously.”

He also urged people of all walks of life to step forward for making blood and posthumous eye donations.

He also said: “I donated blood voluntary many times. Presently, I am not at the age of dominating blood, but my support to the social movement of blood donation will be there always.”

Sandhani Jatiya Chokkhudaan Samity and Sandhani Kendriya Parishad organized the inaugural ceremony.

With president of Sandhani Jatiya Chokkhudaan Samity Professor Dr M Ali Asgar Morol in the chair, the programme was also addressed by lawmaker Dr Dipu Moni.

Secretary General of Sandhani Jatiya Chokkhudaan Samity Professor Dr M Habib Millat, president of Sandhani Kendriya Parishad M Aqib Jahan and convener of Sandhani Bhaban inauguration celebration committee Professor Dr Quamrul Hasan Kahn also spoke on the occasion.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had allocated 0.05 acre of land at Nilkhet in the capital to Sandhani at a token price in 2001.
