Former Chief of Army Staff and president of the controversial Destiny Group, M Harun-ur-Rashid (Bir Pratik) found dead in a room at Chattogram Club on Monday (August 4) afternoon.
Assistant Commissioner Mahfuzur Rahman of Chattogram Metropolitan Police's Kotwali Zone confirmed the matter to Banglanews.
He said that members of Harun-ur-Rashid’s family arrived at the club after he was found unresponsive. A medical team from Chattogram Combined Military Hospital examined him at the scene and later declared him dead.
According to police, family, and other sources, the former army chief had arrived in Chattogram on Sunday (August 3) in connection with a court case. He checked into Chattogram Club that day. As he had not emerged from his room by Monday afternoon, staff became concerned. After repeated calls went unanswered, the door was broken open, and he was found lying unresponsive. Authorities were then notified.
The cause of his death has not yet been confirmed.
M Harun-ur-Rashid was a decorated freedom fighter and served as the Chief of Army Staff from 2000 to 2002. He also held diplomatic assignments and was a resident of Hathazari, Chattogram.
