The top leader of the Banned militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir was arrested from Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday (December 8) night.
The arrestee was Tauhidur Rahman alias Tauhid alias Sifat, 29.
Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) chief Md Asaduzzaman confirmed the matter at a press conference held yesterday.
He said Tauhidur graduated from Dhaka University (DU), and after graduation, he became a full-time member of the militant organisation. Apart from that, a family member of the arrestee is a civil service officer.
Tauhidur was arrested twice in 2011 and 2019. He got out of jail on bail and got involved in organizational activities again, he said.
He said in 12 years, Tauhidur became one of the top leaders of the organization.
The arrestee will be sent to the court seeking a 10-day remand for interrogation, the he added.
The official said, "We were trying hard to identify the top leaders but we could not yet. Identifying them is a challenge.”
