RANGPUR: The daylong hartal, called by BNP-led 18-party alliance, is underway in the district amid attempt to bring out procession and obstruction by police.
The opposition alliance is enforcing the hartal for protesting the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and demanding withdrawal of ‘false cases’ against the leaders and activists of the alliance.
18-party leaders and activists tried to bring out a protest procession in the station area at around 7:30am but police dispersed them, reported banglanews correspondent.
However, no picketer was seen in any area of the town.
All the schools, colleges and Hospitals remained open. Roads were seen busy.
Additional police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel were deployed in the area ahead of the visit of the Premier.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to visit her Pirganj constituency in Rangpur as part of her electioneering for the January 5 national elections.
President of Pirganj upazila unit Awami League Motaharul Haque Bablu said Sheikh Hasina also president of the party is expected to address at least five rallies during her visit to Pirganj.
