Shafiqul Alam, Bangladesh bureau chief of Agence France-Presse (AFP), has been appointed as the press secretary to Prof Muhammad Yunus, the interim government’s chief adviser.
The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification in this regard on Tuesday.
Shafiqul’s contractual appointment (in the rank of secretary) will come into effect from the day of his joining.
With a fixed salary of Tk78,000 and other government benefits, the renowned journalist would perform his duty for the duration of the chief adviser’s tenure or as per his satisfaction, read the notification.
“My job as the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser is challenging. There are only a handful of people who can match the energy of Professor Muhammad Yunus,” Shafiqul wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday night.
“If I got disillusioned, I won't return to AFP or agency journalism in future. Will try to be back in local journalism or do some slow journalism or even write books. I took considerable financial pain to join this job. I hope I will be able to fulfill all the expectations. Seek your prayers and good wishes!!” read the post.
