Matia Chowdhury passes away

Matia Chowdhury, a veteran politician and a presidium member of Awami League, passed away at the age of 82.

She was suffering from age-related health complications, a family member confirmed.

She breathed her last at 11:00 am on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.

The general manager of the hospital, Arif Mahmud, confirmed the matter.

Matia Chowdhury was born on June 30, 1942, in Nazirpur, Pirojpur District. She graduated from the University of Dhaka. 

She was a prominent figure in Bangladesh's political landscape. From 2009 to 2024, she served as Deputy Leader of parliament and was elected MP from Sherpur-2 constituency.

Matia was the minister of Agriculture from 1996 to 2001 and then again from 2009 to 2019 during the previous tenures of Bangladesh Awami League.
