Government firm on holding elections in February: Law Adviser Law Adviser Prof. Asif Nazrul

Law Adviser Prof. Asif Nazrul has said that the government is determined to hold the next national parliamentary elections in February next year.

He said, “We are resolute that the election will be held in February. We will move forward with February in mind.”

Speaking to journalists after a meeting at the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat on Tuesday (August 19), he reaffirmed the government’s position.

When asked whether differing statements from political parties had created uncertainty over the timing of the polls, the adviser replied that organizing elections was the responsibility of the government, not political parties.

“The government is determined to hold the election. Political parties speak differently for different purposes, and that is part of the political process,” he said.

He added that such debates were not new to Bangladesh’s politics.

“Traditionally, these discussions have always taken place in the same way. There has not been much qualitative change in political discourse. So, differing views on election timing should be seen as part of the political process,” he explained.

Professor Nazrul further said, “Our Chief Adviser is a globally respected figure. He himself has announced the timing of the elections, and there is not the slightest thought of retreating from that announcement.”
