Bangladesh is resolute in its efforts to tackle human trafficking, said Home Affairs Adviser Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury during the third meeting of the BIMSTEC Sub-Group on Human Trafficking in Dhaka today (April 6).
Speaking at the event, Chowdhury highlighted the country's strengthened legal framework, vigilant law enforcement, and enhanced border security measures aimed at curbing human trafficking.
He also underscored the significance of public awareness campaigns designed to educate the public on the dangers of trafficking.
The adviser detailed Bangladesh's proactive approach, including the development of a national action plan, the establishment of a special tribunal for trafficking cases, and the creation of a national referral system to connect victims with services.
He also mentioned the expanded legal cooperation with BIMSTEC member states to strengthen regional efforts against trafficking.
The Adviser called for a collaborative, strategic approach to combat trafficking, noting that traffickers are constantly adapting to new methods, including exploiting economic vulnerabilities and using technology to circumvent government actions.
He underscored the vital role of BIMSTEC in facilitating intelligence sharing and best practices among its members.
Chowdhury expressed gratitude for Bangladesh’s new chairmanship of BIMSTEC and reaffirmed the country's commitment to leading efforts to enhance cooperation and develop effective policies to combat human trafficking in the region.
