The Election Commission (EC) is set to take a tougher stance on enforcing the electoral code of conduct and may exclude the use of campaign posters altogether in upcoming polls.
Following a meeting at the EC headquarters in Agargaon on Monday (7 April), Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar said the draft code of conduct is nearing finalization and will soon be placed before the full commission for approval.
"We are working on finalizing the code of conduct, incorporating proposals from the Reform Commission and provisions for local government elections," he said. "We aim to ensure a level playing field, particularly in rural areas, reduce campaign expenses, and maintain order."
The commissioner noted that the Reform Commission recommended a ban on poster use. "I think that proposal is reasonable," he said, adding that there are also concerns about misinformation on social media.
The EC plans to enhance monitoring tools and is considering stricter penalties — including raising current Tk 200 or Tk 500 fines — to reinforce compliance.
"The penal code may be applied beyond the election code," he added.
Regarding party registration, Sarkar confirmed that the State Reform Movement had filed a writ petition, which would apply only to that group.
While one or two parties have applied, more applications are expected by the 20 April deadline. "If many apply by then, we will assess whether an extension is needed," he said.
In response to a separate query, the commissioner said a proposal to amend a clerical error in the Delimitation Act still awaits cabinet approval.
"If it is not cleared in time, boundaries will be determined under the current law," he also said.
