DHAKA:  Production in Habiganj gas field resumed on Tuesday afternoon on a higher scale after over a month’s of closure for renovation.

Petrobangla Chairman Hossain Mansur said, “Some 3 crore cubic feet (cft) gas is now being extracted daily from No 11 well. The produced gas will play a role in tackling the existing gas crisis.”

A source in the gas field said production of gas in the field had dropped to 10/15 lakh cft from over 1 crore cft in previous times.

Under the circumstances, Petrobangla started ‘work-over’ works in the well by the BAPEX, suspending operation on June 5.

Earlier, gas was extracted from the lower zone of underground layers, but now the gas is being pumped out from the upper level of the well.

The authorities expected to raise the daily production to 3.80 cft soon, under measures taken to mitigate the fuel crunch in the country.
