Sylhet airport to launch first cargo operation tomorrow

Bangladesh is set to launch its first cargo flight from Sylhet’s Osmani International Airport on Sunday, marking a major step in strengthening its export logistics after India’s suspension of third-country transshipment.

A chartered Airbus A330-300 freighter operated by Galistair Aviation will depart Sunday evening, carrying 60 tonnes of ready-made garments to Spain.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines will handle ground services, with full preparations completed, said CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Md Monjur Kabir Bhuiyan.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin will inaugurate the ceremony, joined by other officials.

The flight will receive a ceremonial water cannon salute before departing at 7:10 pm.

Sylhet now becomes Bangladesh's second airport for dedicated cargo operations after Dhaka.

Plans are also underway to begin cargo flights from Chattogram soon.

Officials expect the move to ease export bottlenecks and reduce reliance on regional hubs, especially with Dhaka airport’s Third Terminal nearing completion.
