Signal No. 3 for seaports, signal No. 1 for river ports

Bangladesh has issued weather alerts for all maritime and river ports as the risk of storms intensifies under the influence of an active monsoon.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department announced on Saturday (August 23) that all seaports have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal No. 3, while river ports have been instructed to display cautionary signal No. 1.

Meteorologist Md Tariful Newaz Kabir said strong winds from the south and southeast, at speeds of 45–60 kilometres per hour, accompanied by rain or thundershowers, may sweep across several regions, including Faridpur, Madaripur, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar. As a result, river ports in these areas have been asked to display the warning signal.

The Met Office further reported that due to active monsoon conditions, heavy cloud formations continue over the northern Bay of Bengal. This is likely to trigger squally weather over the bay, coastal regions, and maritime ports.

Accordingly, the ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been directed to keep hoisting local cautionary signal No. 3.

Meanwhile, fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay of Bengal have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
