Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) today (Aug 17) forecast comparatively heavier rainfall in six divisions, with the possibility of heavy downpours in some areas for the next 24 hours.
The forecast, issued on Sunday, August 17, said Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may experience more rainfall than other regions. Some parts of the Rajshahi and Khulna divisions are also expected to see showers.
Meteorologist Dr Abul Kalam Mallik said the low-pressure area that had been centred over south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coastal areas is now located over Chhattisgarh and adjoining regions, where it has become less significant.
The extension of the monsoon trough stretches from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh across the low-pressure centre, Odisha, the north Bay of Bengal and southern Bangladesh up to Assam.
The monsoon is moderately active over Bangladesh and in a fairly strong state over the north Bay of Bengal.
Another low-pressure area may form over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal within the next 12 hours.
According to the forecast valid until Monday morning, many places in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and a few places in Rajshahi and Khulna divisions, may see light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is also likely in some parts of the country. Daytime temperatures may fall slightly, while night-time temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
For the following 24 hours from Monday morning, the forecast indicates many areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and a few parts of Rajshahi and Dhaka divisions, may witness light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds.
Moderate to heavy, and at times heavy, downpours are likely at some places in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
