Dhaka: Hundreds of vehicles got stranded on both sides of the Daulatdia-Paturia river route Friday as incessant rain coupled with stormy weather on Thursday night had halted ferry service for nearly three hours.
According to the office of the Deputy Director of BIWTC at Aricha ghat on the Jamuna River, ferrying vehicle remained suspended since 11:45pm Thursday to 2:30am Friday, creating long queues of all modes of transport.
Although the ferry operation resumed at about 2:30am, tailbacks stretching over two miles had developed by then on the busy Dhaka-Aricha and Goalunda-Faridpur highways across the confluence of Padma and Jamuna rivers.
“Sufferings of the passengers, particularly women and children, knew no bounds during the suspension of ferry service and traffic jams,” says an eyewitness account of the situation.
