DHAKA: Pilots of Biman Bangladesh Airlines can now fly planes at the age of 62 on contract job.

Biman authorities have taken this decision in a board-of-directors meeting recently.

Earlier, the pilots’ working age-limit was 57.

Jakiul Islam, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the national aviation company, Biman, told banglanews24.com.bd that the decision has been taken due to shortage of pilots. If anyone proves fit after 57 years of age, he or she can continue in the job till 62 years of age, he said.

"But we’re not taking decision immediately to extend their job till 65 years. Decision will be taken after discussion in a board meeting," he added.

A member of the board of directors told banglanews24.com.bd that the decision goes in Biman’s favour, not in self-interest or dishonest purposes.

The decision was taken as per direction of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, they said.

Capt. Ashraf Khan, President of Bangladesh Airline Pilots` Association (BAPA), told banglanews24.com.bd, “We welcome the Biman decision, but we hope the authorities would raise the age-limit up to 65.”
