DHAKA: Armed assailants shot a man to death and wounded another at Nayatola in city’s Moghbazar area Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Swapan Talukder, 35, a brick and sand trader.

Victim’s family members said Sawpan left home for a pharmacy to buy medicine at about 8:30pm.

The assailants led by Sentu, Ali Hossain and Zakir sprayed bullets on Swapan at point blank range as he reached Madaripur Pharmacy at Ambagh leaving him critically injured, they said. He received bullets in head and chest.

During the shooting spree, passerby Nuru was also injured by a stray bullet.

Locals rushed them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Swapan died at about 11.40pm.

Swapan’s mother claimed that Sentu, Ali Hossain and Zakir demanded Tk 50,000 toll from Swapan few months ago. “As he refused to meet their demand, they came down with the daring attack on Swapan,” she said. After the attack, Sawpan filed a written complaint with Ramna Police Station.

Ramna Thana police, however, said Swapan was a listed terrorist and the second in-command of Zisan group, a terrorist group and that he was engaged in drug trading.

Police suspect Swapan might have been killed in a sequel to sharing of extortion money.

A murder case was filed with Ramna Thana.
