NOAKHALI: At least six roobers, including their leader, and 15 others held in a gunfight with law enforcers and sporadic mob beating that prolonged for 3-day (Thursday to Saturday) at Hatia upazila in the district.
The leader was identified robber Yunus, 38, who was killed in gunfight with police early Thursday and his five cohorts were lynched on Friday and Saturday.
The other deceased were identified as Jamshed, 33, Ashraf, 35, Kefayet, 32, Osman, 32 and Sarwar, 30.
Witness and police sources said that the robbers had been attacking, looting and killing island dwellers under Hatia Thana for a long time.
To ensure discipline and peace of the people, district police led by police super conducted a drive and in a gunfight robber leader Yunus died, sources added.
During the drive law enforcing agency personnel also recovered huge amount of arms--LG’s, pistols, 30 rounds of bullet, bullets of 3 not 3 rifle, signal bombs, chinese axes and locally made weapons.
Sources also said, without informing police, local people started drive to hunt the robbers and lynched five cohorts of Yunus.
Cofirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Hatia Thana Khorshed Alam told banglanews that police recovered the bodies and sent them to Noakhali Medical College Hospital.
Ofiicers of Hatia Thana filed six cases under robbery, killing and arms acts against the held.
Police Super M Anisur Rahman (PPM) told banglanews that police would continue the drive.
