Upazila chairman killed in M’singh

MYMENSINGH: An upazila chairman was killed and around 50 people injured in a clash between two groups of Awami League at Dhobaura upazila of the district on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Furkan Uddin Selim Mridha alias Pahari Selim, 45, chairman of Dhobaura upazila, also general secretary of upazila Awami League.

Sources said Pahari Selim locked into an altercation with local Awami League leader Azizul Haque Khan in the noon.

Apprehending imminent clash, local administration imposed section 144 in the area to avert clash around 3:30pm.

But supporters of Selim and Azizul broke the section 144 and locked into clash, leaving at least 50 injured from both sides.

Police opened fired at least 10 rounds rubber bullet to bring the situation under control.

The fatally injured Selim Mridha was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 8:00pm.
