Fugitive Awami League ex-ministers spotted at London wedding

Several fugitive former ministers and MPs of Bangladesh’s ruling Awami League, who vanished from public view following last year’s mass student and public uprising, have resurfaced in London.

They were seen attending the wedding of the son of UK Awami League General Secretary Syed Sajidur Rahman, held on the evening of April 20 at the InterContinental Hotel in the O2 Arena.

Among those present were former Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, former Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdur Rahman, former State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, former State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, and former Sylhet-3 MP Habibur Rahman Habib.

All are believed to have fled Bangladesh amid mounting pressure from the July-August 2024 uprising. They reportedly face multiple cases back home, including charges of corruption and human rights violations. However, it remains unclear when or how they left the country.

Photos from the wedding, showing the former officials smiling, chatting, and posing with guests, have gone viral on social media—drawing renewed attention to their presence abroad.

Earlier images of Hasan Mahmud, Abdur Rahman, and Shafiqur Rahman sharing coffee in an undisclosed location had also circulated online.
