Activists of the BNP-backed student wing, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), once again blocked the key Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka on Thursday (May 22), demanding justice for the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo.
The protest, part of a pre-announced programme, began around 10:45 am amid heavy rainfall.
Demonstrators called for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the killing, accusing authorities of negligence in the investigation.
Shammo, a student at the Institute of Education and Research at Dhaka University, was fatally stabbed by unidentified assailants at Suhrawardy Udyan on May 13.
His death has triggered a wave of outrage among student groups, particularly Chhatra Dal, who claim the incident reflects the broader failure of university and state authorities to ensure campus safety.
While the main way remained blocked, some rickshaws and light vehicles were seen moving through nearby roads. Ambulances and vehicles carrying patients were allowed to pass, according to witnesses.
The demonstrators say their demands include the arrest of all individuals involved in the murder, a transparent investigation, and the resignation of the university’s Vice-Chancellor and Proctor, whom they accuse of failing to maintain campus security.
Chhatra Dal leaders said the protest would continue until 5 pm and would also include a sit-in outside Hotel Intercontinental later in the day.
