Islami Andolan Bangladesh, led by Charmonai Pir, began its grand rally at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Saturday (June 28), drawing a large turnout from across the country.
Although the formal programme was scheduled to commence at 2:00pm, supporters and activists started gathering at the venue early in the morning. By mid-morning, the grounds were filled to capacity.
The first phase of the rally began at 10:00 am with the recitation of the Holy Quran.
Senior leaders from Islami Andolan and its regional units are addressing the gathering, representing districts and metropolitan areas nationwide.
The event is expected to see the participation of leaders from various political parties, particularly those in favour of a proportional representation system in national elections.
Islami Andolan’s Secretary General, Principal Hafez Maulana Yunus Ahmad, has already arrived at the rally site.
Security has been visibly heightened in and around Suhrawardy Udyan in anticipation of the large public gathering, with law enforcement maintaining a strong presence to ensure order.
