Members of Benapole Immigration Police on Sunday (June 29) detained Anwaruzzaman Joseph, former union parishad chairman and a member of the Khaliyajuri upazila unit of the Awami League in Netrokona, while he was attempting to travel to India.
He was arrested this afternoon from the Benapole International Checkpost area, said Elias Hossain Munshi, officer-in-charge of Benapole Immigration.
OC Elias Hossain said the immigration authorities had prior information about Joseph’s travel plan to India and had alerted officials in advance. When he submitted his passport at the immigration desk, officials verified his identity and detained him.
He also said that several cases have been filed against Joseph at both Khaliyajuri Police Station and Netrokona Sadar Police Station.
“Joseph will be handed over to Benapole Port Police Station for further legal procedures,” the immigration official added.
Joseph is the son of late Siddiqur Rahman from Khaliyajuri upazila in Netrokona district.
Benapole Port Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Russell Mia confirmed the matter.
He said, “Immigration police have informed us about the detention. Once they complete their procedure, the accused will be handed over to us.”
Joseph will later be transferred to the relevant police station where the cases are filed, he added.
