BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan has said that discussions can be held on the proportional representation (PR) system, but those using the issue to divide the democratic aspirations of the people do not believe in Bangladesh’s founding ideals.
He made the remarks while addressing the BNP-backed Olama Dal’s general meeting at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in the capital.
Dr Moyeen Khan emphasized that the student community’s sacrifices in the country’s democratic movements are undeniable, with 80 to 90 percent of those sacrifices made by supporters of the BNP. “Yet they always stood as representatives of the common people,” he added.
He also said that Bangladesh is not a property owned by any one group, warning against repeating the past mistakes of the Awami League.
Dr Moyeen Khan criticized the current political atmosphere, saying, “Some people now act as though they own the country.”
He questioned why the large number of cases—over 100,000 filed against BNP activists, implicating nearly five million party members—has not been acknowledged, stating that no other party has faced such repression.
