Khaleda calls for unity to restore democracy

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday urged the people to remain united to restore democracy and protect Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.

She made the call while addressing a discussion titled ‘National Unity and Democratic Journey’ marking the anniversary of the July Uprising. The event, organised by the BNP, was held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka. Khaleda Zia joined the programme virtually.

“For the past 16 years, the Awami League has tried to destroy democracy and establish one-party rule through fascist repression, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings,” she said. “The united uprising of students and people has brought down that fascist regime.”

Expressing deep respect for those who were killed or injured during the uprising, Khaleda said: “This sacrifice will be remembered by the nation forever.”

She said that the need for a comprehensive list of victims of enforced disappearances, killings and extrajudicial actions, and demanded swift trials for those responsible. She also called for state recognition, rehabilitation and a secure future for the affected families.

Khaleda Zia also said that the opportunity to institutionalise democracy must be implemented quickly, alongside ensuring people’s security, employment and fundamental rights.

“We must keep our unity intact. Let us all work together to realise the dream of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and build a new Bangladesh for millions. At any cost, we must safeguard our country’s independence and sovereignty,” she added.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman joined the event virtually from London. Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi presided over the discussion, while Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir joined as a special guest.

Families of victims of enforced disappearances and leaders of various BNP front organisations also attended the programme.
