EC publishes gazette restoring Jamaat’s registration, symbol

Election Commission (EC) has published the official gazette confirming the restoration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration as a political party, including its traditional election symbol—the scale.

EC officials confirmed the development on Thursday (July 3).

Earlier, on June 24, the commission issued a notification reinstating Jamaat’s registration and sent it to the BG Press for printing. The gazette was officially published on June 26.

According to the gazette, signed by EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, Jamaat-e-Islami was originally registered on November 5, 2008, under Section 90(B) of the Representation of the People Order (RPO).

The party’s registration was later cancelled by the EC on October 28, 2018, based on a verdict from the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court following a writ petition.

However, the Appellate Division later overturned that High Court verdict, ordering the reinstatement of Jamaat’s registration.

Following the Appellate Division’s ruling, the EC has now formally cancelled its earlier notification from October 2018 and restored Jamaat’s registration along with its election symbol, the scale.

With the publication of this gazette, Jamaat-e-Islami has regained its full legal right to contest elections under its official symbol. However, EC sources said the scale symbol is yet to be officially re-listed in the election rules and that process will be completed soon.
