Interim govt to hold national polls in February, hopes Fakhrul Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir speaking to reporters in Sylhet

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday (July 7) expressed optimism that a national election will be held under an interim government in February.

He said, “We hope the interim government will organise national elections in February. Only through fair elections can democracy be restored and the country move in the right direction.”

Fakhrul was speaking to reporters in Sylhet, after visiting the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA).

He said he prayed for the health and recovery of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who remains critically ill.

Fakhrul also attended a discussion organised by Sylhet district and metropolitan BNP, where he urged political actors and the public to unite in implementing the "new path" inspired by the recent student-led protests.

Referring to the July student uprising, he said, “This bloody movement has shown us a way forward. Everyone must now work together to realise that vision.”

He alleged that around six million BNP leaders and activists across the country have been falsely charged in political cases, and claimed that thousands have lost their lives due to state repression.
