Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman GM Quader has appointed Barrister Shameem Haider Patwary, also MP from Gaibandha-1 constituency, as the new Secretary General of the party, replacing Md. Mujibul Haque Chunnu.
The appointment was confirmed on Monday (July 7) by the party chairman’s press secretary, Khandaker Delwar Jalali.
Prior to the appointment, Shameem Haider Patwary was serving as a Presidium Member and Additional Secretary General of the Jatiya Party.
A lawyer by profession, he has been actively involved in the party’s policymaking and previously served as an advisor to the late party founder and former president, Hussain Muhammad Ershad.
Patwary entered parliament through a by-election in March 2018 from Gaibandha-1, following the death of MP Golam Mostafa Ahmed.
He was later re-elected from the same constituency in the 11th National Parliamentary Election held on December 30, 2018, contesting under the party’s plough symbol.
His elevation to Secretary General comes at a time when the Jatiya Party, the main opposition in the current parliament, is undergoing internal reorganisations ahead of the next national election cycle.
