The trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for “July massacre” has begun and justice must be done those who worked in favour of the fascist regime, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Wednesday (July 9) after visiting ailing party leaders at the National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital in the capital.
“BNP is the biggest victim of the Awami League’s torture, oppression, killings, forced disappearances, and murders,” Fakhrul said, adding, “I myself faced 112 cases and had to go to jail 13 times.”
He said, “Those who supported fascism must be punished and brought under the rule of law.”
Holding Sheikh Hasina “personally responsible” for the killings and torture of thousands, Fakhrul said, “Her trial has started. We are hopeful that everyone involved in the genocide and this fascist system will be brought to justice.”
He also said that if evidence proves the Awami League was collectively involved in the killings, the party should be tried as an organisation.
Highlighting BNP’s role in establishing democracy in the country, Fakhrul said, “If there is any major force for democracy, it is BNP. It is the BNP that fought the most and brought back multi-party democracy from one-party rule in Bangladesh.”
Fakhrul called on all political parties to take responsibility in putting the country back on the right path.
