MahmudurÔÇÖs bail petition in corruption charge rejected

DHAKA: A Dhaka court Thursday rejected the bail petition of Mahmudur   Rahman, the acting editor of the now-defunct daily Amar Desh, in a corruption case of evading submission of his wealth statement to the Anti-corruption Commission.

Metropolitan Magistrate Kanika Biswas issued the order at about 12noon after the bail petition was moved by Mahmudur`s lawyer.

The court fixed August 16 for submission of the investigation report on the case.
Masud Ahmed, the counsel for Mahmudur Rahman, told banglanews24.com.bd that the court, instead, granted the appeal filed on July 13 by ACC assistant director Nur Ahmed, also the investigation officer of the case, to show Rahman arrested in the case.

Nur Ahmed filed the case with Gulshan Thana on June 13 against Mahmudur Rahman for not submitting his wealth statement despite ACC’s notice.

Meanwhile, on July 12, the High Court granted Mahmudur Rahman bail in criminal cases filed with different police stations.
A day after stopping the publication of Amar Desh and sealing off its press on June 2 by the government, police arrested Mahmudur Rahman from his office on fraud charges brought against him by the paper`s publisher, Hashmat Ali Hashu.
