DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy blamed incumbent Awami League (AL) as well as his party for holding general election on January 5.

He made the remark while delivering speech in a discussion meeting organized by Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Karmajibi Dal at National Press Club in city on Friday.

Gayeshwar said AL and BNP met with United Nations (UN) Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Oscar Fernandez-Taranco over the elections when BNP’s movement was on high tide.

Senior BNP leader also said incumbent Awami League said an election was essential for maintaining the continuity of democracy and after that another free and fair election would be arranged with all parties’ participation.

But BNP leaders who attended the meeting did not disclose the agenda of that meeting, he alleged.

Gayeshwar blamed the BNP leaders for concealing the agenda of the meeting and said, “The supporters left the field of movement. They would not return as the party has intention for demonstration but do not have preparations.”

He also urged for movement avoiding self-interest. 

He remarked that there is no value in requesting the government as they would not accept others demand due to its baselessness and should start movement with one-point demand of removal of the government.

Indicating the verdict on maritime boundary Gayeshwar said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not deny about the existence of South Talpatti in the last 25 years but now she has reversed her stand.

All is possible for the premier, he alleged.

With president of Karmajibi Dal Hazi Liton in the chair, BNP chairperson’s advisor Shamsuzzaman Dudu and Swadhinata Forum president Abu Naser M Rahmatullah, amomg others, also addressed the program.
