DHAKA: Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Friday said there would be no traffic congestion for dilapidate conditions on roadways during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.

The minister was talking to the reporters such while visiting Mohakhali bus terminal in the city.

Obaidul said, “No congestion will happen due to dilapidate  conditions rather it may occur, if drivers run vehicles non-disciplinarily; any journalists did not even reported that there was any congestion for last 10 days that took place for (bad condition of) roads.”

He urged the drivers to run the vehicle keeping their head cool saying, “Habit of driving in wrong side and reckless driving may took place congestion.”

The minister called the bus-truck owners and workers not to launch unfit vehicles on the road. “Because plying of an unfit vehicle on the road for 10 minutes may create 100-kilometre long traffic congestion,” he said.

“Such incident happened near the Daudkandi Bridge as a covered van trapped there and I myself went there and solved the problem,” he added.

Regarding heavy vehicles plying on highways, the minister said, “From today (Friday), no heavy vehicles will be plied on highways except for vehicles of perishable goods, drugs and medicines.”

Regarding the four lane construction works of Dhaka-Chittagong highways, Obaidul said, “It is not true that the construction works is in a slow pace, it is progressing well.”

“But the bitumen (on roads) can not be used during monsoon season as rain destroys it that can be applied during winter,” he added.
