DHAKA: After 11 years, ruling Awami League (AL), the oldest political party of the country, is going to announce fresh committees for its Dhaka city units soon.

Sources told banglanews that this time ruling Awami League is likely to introduce a new formation of controlling capital.

The ruling party is likely to form two separate committees for Dhaka city.

Amongst them, Advocate Quamrul Islam as the president and Shah-e-Alam Murad as general secretary may lead the Dhaka South committee, sources added.

On the other hand, AKM Rahmatullah as the president and Sadek Khan as general secretary will lead the north.

Awami League’s joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif told banglanews that the city committee(s) will be declared soon.

“Party leader Sheikh Hasina, herself, will choose the committee,” he added.

Incumbent Awami League city committee general secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury said that if central body forms a fresh committee it will be informed to the media, there is nothing to ask him.

However, the party was failed to form a new committee for its city unit over the past 11 years because of infighting.

The last committee was announced on February 5, 2004, with the then mayor, late Mohammad Hanif, as its president, and Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya as its general secretary.

After Hanif passed away on November 28, 2006, MA Aziz was made the acting president.

According to the AL’s constitution, the council was supposed to be held every three years.
