BNP to cancel broadcast policy if elected

DHAKA: Senior leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) declared that they would cancel the newly approved draft of broadcast policy if they assume to power.

The party also termed it as a ‘media control and repression policy’.

BNP’s two top leaders MK Anwar and Dr Abdul Moin Khan made the declaration at a press conference at BNP chairperson’s political office in city’s Gulshan area on Tuesday afternoon.

In a written statement, BNP standing committee member Moin complained that the controversial cabinet approved the draft of National Broadcast Policy which is really a repressive policy for media.

He also urged all democratic groups to protest against the policy as it was made to stop the voice of the opponent parties.

The BNP leader further said that according to the policy, a commission would be established by a search committee under information ministry. It means that media will be propaganda machinery and dangerous arms of the government.

BNP vice-chairman Abdullah al Noman, Khaleda’s press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan Sohel and deputy office secretary Shamimur Rahman Shamin, among others, were present in the conference.
