Babar indicted in tax evasion case

DHAKA: A Dhaka court Wednesday framed charge against Lufuzzaman Babar, the former state minister for home, in a tax evasion case.

The Special Judges Court-5 passed the order after deferring the indictment hearing several times over the past four years and three months.

Earlier, Babar was taken to the court from jail.

Though he secure bail in the case but he was in jail in August 21 grenade attack case and he, however, has been sentenced to death in the 10-truck arms haul case.

The National Board of Revenue filed the tax evasion case on Feb 14, 2010 with the Dhaka's Senior Judges Court.

According to case details, Babar evaded paying Tk 26.5 million in tax between 1999-2000 and 2008-2009 years as director of Master Electronics Limited.

After deferring the hearing 47 times, the indictment hearing was hled on June 29 where Special PP Kabir Hossain stood for state while lawyer T M Akber moved for Babar.

Later, the Special Judges Court-5 fixed August 6 to pronounce the decision whether to indict the former minster.
