DHAKA: The leaders and activists of ruling Awami League’s political rival Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are getting packed with the piles of lawsuit, mostly filed by the government.
Scores of stalwarts, including BNP chairperson, its standing committee members, Dhaka city unit’s committee convener and member secretary, have been accused at least in a case, some leaders are also accused in several cases.
Trials of some cases have already got underway while charge-sheets have been submitted in most of the cases.
Amid these battles against court, the BNP has declared it is going to wage movement in a bid to topple the government.
Recently, charge sheet has been submitted naming BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, which he claimed the motive (of government) is to keep BNP away from polls and to wipe it out of the politics.
The case does not even have least connection to the politics, in which Fakhrul has been named for, opined metropolitan public prosecutor Abdullah Abu.
Even party chief Khakeda Zia is sued in five separate cases in different times, trial has already begun in two of those lawsuits.
Khaleda will have to appear before the court, set up on Alia Madarasa playground in the city, in a corruption case on September 3.
A Dhaka court has a date to conduct charge framing hearing on September 3 in a case related to vehicle torching in front of Prime Minister’s Office. Some 46 BNP men including Fakhrul are accused in the case.
The court is likely to frame charges in this case on September 4.
The court also fixed August 24 a date for hearing in a case filed with Ramna Thana. BNP standing committee member Modud Ahmed is among the accused.
In addition, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) had filled a good number of cases against many BNP leaders, including standing committee members Barrister Zamir Uddin Sircar, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Dr Khodakar Mossarof Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, Amamullah Amam, and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud.
Many of the cases were under stay order of court, and recently court has also withdrawn the stay order from some cases following the request of the commission.
