DHAKA: Alleging that there is no independence of judiciary in the country, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday night said the power to impeach justices is being taken over by the Jatiya Sangsad to take the whole judiciary under government control.
She made the allegation while meeting the upazila chairmen, vice-chairmen and women vice-chairmen from Rangpur district at her Gulshan political office.
BNP-backed 24 upazila chairmen, 14 vice-chairmen and 24 women vice-chairmen and Jamaat-e-Islami-backed 8 upazila chairmen, 30 vice-chairmen and 11 women vice-chairmen were present in the meeting.
Khaleda Zia alleged, “Two judicial systems are enduring in the country now. Ruling Awami League men do no face trial even if they commit serious crimes; on the other hand, opposition men are not getting any justice even if they are innocent.”
“There is no independence for the judiciary in the country now. JS is taking authority to impeach judges to take control of the judicial system,” she added.
She also termed the incumbent government “illegal” as what she said they were not elected by people.
Indicating all chairmen, BNP chairperson said, “You are the real representative of people as you were elected by them.”
Acting Secretary General of the party Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee member Dr RA Gani, Lieutenant General (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar and Organizing Secretary Asadul Habib Dulu also were present in the meeting.
