DHAKA: Police Tuesday detained a leader of the banned Islamist outfit Hizb-ut-Tahrir who is also a university teacher who teaches business know-how.

Mahmudul Hasan Fayeji, Lecturer of Marketing of Jagannath University, was held on the Dhaka University campus.

Dr Saiful Islam Khan, Proctor of Dhaka University, told banglanews24.com.bd that the Jagannath varsity teacher confessed to his involvement in Hizb-ut-Tahrir activities.

To question about his role in the Islamist party Mahmud, refused to talk to journalists. "I will talk to the Proctor about the matter," he said.

Rezaul Karim, Officer-in-Charge of Sahbagh Thana, said, "We detained a man named Mahmudul Hasan, Lecturer of Jagannath University, for his involvement with the banned organization.”

Police seized 7 mobile-sim cards and two mobile-phone sets from his bag.

Mahmud was a student of the Department of Marketing of the University of Dhaka in 1999-2000 academic sessions.

He joined as a lecturer of marketing in Jagannath University in 2007.

Two Dhaka University teachers of the same discipline--Mohiuddin Ahmed of IBA and Syed Golam Mawla of Management—were earlier arrested as top leaders of Tahrir. Mohiuddin Ahmed is reportedly chief coordinator while the latter its Bangladesh operations coordinator.
