DHAKA: The physical condition of former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Ghulam Azam, who is serving a 90-year imprisonment for war crimes, is improving day by day.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Medicine Department Head Professor Dr ABM Abdullah confirmed the matter to banglanews on Tuesday.

He told banglanews that Ghulam Azam’s physical condition is improving. “But, he might be kept at intensive care unit for few more days.”

Mentioning that he had checked former Jamaat-e-Islami chief’s health status in the morning, Dr ABM Abdullah said as Ghulam Azam’s age has already crossed 93, he is suffering from old age complications.

He added: “The Jamaat leader is suffering from pneumonia, high blood pressure, heart diseases, prostate gland burn, stones in gallbladder and bone diseases besides sight and hearing incapability.”

According to the doctor, Ghulam Azam might endure these diseases due to his negligence and irregular eating habits.

Former Jamaat-e-Islami chief, however, was shifted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of BSMMU in city on Friday morning from the Prison Cell as his physical condition deteriorated.

A medical board has been formed under the supervision of Dr Abdullah to check the physical condition of the war crimes convict.

Ghulam Azam, who was also the chief (Ameer) of the then East Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami during the Liberation War in 1971, was the chief of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami between 1991 and 2000.

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on July 15 past year sentenced him 90 years in prison for his involvement in crimes against humanity, genocide and other wartime offences in 1971.
